the show

This is a simple mock up of what I hope that the end of year show will look like for me, I want to string my flicker book across the pillars in the front of the feed studio. To do this I will have to not bind my flicker book. This form of layout I feel will give a great sense of scale and look impressive in the studio I think.

The Final Thing.

Hear are to vids showing my flick book in action. The animation works well, and looks fairly smooth which is a plus. In these two vids I tried to get as many pictures showing as possible but a few are skipped hear and there but over all I think you get the general feel of what the final book will turn out to look like.

Evaluation!

Over all I think this project has gone very well. It was a large task to aspire to and took a lot of effort but I'm very happy with the way the flicker book turned out in the end. One of the things that I feel I have been successful with in this work is the amount of contextual and relevant research I have looked at. In this project I have had the chance to look at many different artists and I feel it has exposed me to different ways of working and creating illustrations. There have been a few ideas floating around my head for this FMP but I went with the first idea I had and developed it, which has been very successful and has been complete, but has caused a lack of varied development work in the blog. This wasn't helped with the fact that I heavily researched and drew ideas from that rather than through trial and error. The development side of my work is my weakest and has the most room to improve. But it is very focused and lead to a very successful final piece.

With the flick book I wanted to look at the nature of evolution and the way some aspects of modern society are very unstable, to help show this I looked at making the drawings and designs very simple in the start, slowly progressing into a more complex heavily drawn stile. Whilst the final book retains this idea I think that the progression is hard to see and could be much clearer. The drawings are very simple and naive which is what I was going for but I feel it may have winded out to much so, b¨t bare in mind the flick-book is supposed to be looked at as a whole and not on an page by page drawing basis. The book has its flaws but at the same time I think it has a small charm to it in the way the charters and environments have been made. I wanted to keep it nice and bright and this I feel I have achieved fairly well.

Something I could have been more careful with is my time management, which I think has been less than great, I got all the work done however I think I could have spaced the work load out better, making the final production less stressful to make.

Overall I think this FMP has been a fun experience and I think I have accomplished a good amount of work. I tried to make something more interesting than a ordinary animation, which was daring and I gave me a harsh learning curve. I hope to achieve well with this project and have had a fun (and not so fun) time with it.

The Beast.

Read the title. My flicker book in all its unholy glory! Worked my ass of on this one and it was a interesting experience, that I never want to have again. The amount of time I've vested in making the book is substantial but thats to be expected with the FMP I guess, overall I think it could be better but I'm pleased with it and no can say that I didn't try can they?

Some more

This is an attempt of another hand rendered route I could have gone down, this idea was to use the idea of repeating patterns found in most of my research with zak smiths stile of cross hatching, it would have taken me a long tine to do however and I'm not particularly fond of it, I think the format is way to busy to be read as a flicker book and the smaller details are lost.

IRON

This is another possible stile chose I could have made if I decided to make the book digital, it is heavily influenced by Sanna Annukkas under the iron sea album cover. For similar reasons with the other idea I chose not to take this any farer. I do really like the stile of it however it has a great boldness to it and the simple shapes are a really nice touch.

Cut out

This was one of my early ideas for my project, I was potentially going to make an animation in aftereffects using simple graphics like the example, it would have been a very nice animation and would have finished well, but this is the FMP and I thought I would do something more adventurous with it so in the end I went with making the hand drawn flick book.

experimentation.

This is the technique that I went with in the end, primarily because I wanted to create a naiveté with the drawings in the flicker book and make the amount of colour variable. I also wanted to keep the book as bright and as eye caching as possible so I felt it was the best chose. I also had some really good examples of ink work in my research and thought it would give the book some flow.

Development!!!!!

The final stage at this point the classical timeline will come up with the transition from ape to man, which will end in a explosion. At this point the colour will have gone from the book leaving only thick lines.

When the newt gets onto the land it will turn into a small mouse like creature. This will have a faire few details on it to show the transition into becoming a mammal 'i.e' fur, the mouse will also walk off the beach and onto the grass. The mouse will then turn into a much larger cow thing I guess which will wonder to a field and eat some grass.

One of the most important parts of the process from a fish it turns into a newt looking creature, which then walks onto the land, at this point the lines will make a full out line of the creature. This is to symbolize it becoming more developed.

In this second stage we see the small triop turn into a larger similarly looking creature, at which point it dives under water.In this part of the fliker book the lines on the creatures will start to become more apparent but not by very much. The creature then turns into a fish and the lines will form almost a complete out line by now.

The start of my development process to make my flicker book. The sketch book page looks at the start of the evolutionary cycle. It starts off as a bacteria, which then grows into a small crustacean, all of this part of the book will take place under water.

Ok these four images are my own work (hard to believe I know). I decided to upload them to show how I've used the technique before, although the work I intend to do for the flicker book will be much cruder these images give you and idea of how I like to work with inks and the potential results of it when used well.

Matisse.

matisse is generally considered one of the forfounders of morden art and graphic design (loosely). His work was very edgy and expremitnal for the time useing bright colours and simple shapes he created outlandish examples of art that confounted the general consensus at the time, so much so that his work was slandered buy the art community and was considerd by most critics at the time to be rubbish. He started off as a painter and created a stile that utlised large blocks of mono colour to create visually striking and 'wild' images, later in his life he began to exprement with the use of cut outs, when he developed this advancement in his work he was in poor health in old age. The last work he made, a church was a push even thourthe usin the stain glass and light itself to create vibrent designes. His work has influenced a great meny people inducing Dick bruna the maker of miffy the rabbit and the ipod adverts. His use of bold colours and intense tones make a strong statement, I could potentially use some of his stile in my own work, maybe making the front and back covers of my book.

Watched this interesting documentary about britain and its arts history, the flick was more historical than artsy but still gave refreshing look into our history of art as a nation.

inspiration and plans.

Ok I thought it would be a good idea to give you all an idea as to where I got my inspiration and reference to help with my flick book. I want to produce the flicker book in ink and wash, in an attempt to show an naive almost childlike approach to the images, this is in reference to has evolution and life started as something very simple. From there I want to have the images when they develop into a human to become much more line and crosshatch based this is to show how humanity is very corrupt and violative at the moment, the two inspirations for the stiles I'm going to be using are Filipe Jardim and zak smith who specializes in illustrations using lifelike image and and crosshatching.

Will sweeney

A very Griffith inspired image which uses a lot of bright colours and very creative charters to create a very cartoony, out of this world feel. The bold block use of colours and the confidence in the stile really shows in this pieces. Having confidence in the work you do is very important and I feel that this work shows why.

Siggi eggertsson

This work is very cool, one of the most distinctive stiles around, the artist uses the concept of pixel art with a twist, he uses round pixels instead of square ones. This simple change makes the work very unique and gives it a very interesting feel. Having such a noticeable stile is something that I must consider when I'm making my book.

Sanna Annukka

A very nice stile and one I may consider experimenting with. The work Annukka produces is always bright vectored and very fun to look at. I like how the work gets across shapes and things in a very raw almost symbol based form. I fully intend to hand draw my book but I'm considering making a front and back cover which I can potentially use this stile for.

Parra

I love the lively use of typography in this example of work. The blatancy of the hand rendered typeface really shows and I feel that rather that detracting from the work actually improves it in some ways. The piece uses bright colours on a smooth black background which creates a very 'neon' effect.

Mimi leung

An example of work where the overriding focus is contrasting on creating an intricate pattern. In this case the image is also part made up buy the pattern which also contains mini versions of the character, the head is also drawn in very neutral colours and when compared with its 'hair' contrasts really well, making them both stand out much more.

Matt furie

A very good and very relative example of a hand rendered piece of work. The image has a very strong sense of naivety with it which is something that I really want to capture with my flick book as well as a very stylized and interesting colour application, using both crayons and inks. Simple drawings like this that clearly show an image or point are very influential in my work.

Mat maitland

An very bold and unique stile, that may not be to everybody tastes, Maitland uses very garish bright colours with photos to create a very noticeable and interesting image. Say what you want about the work but you can't say it didn't cache your eye.

letman

This example of work is a little different to the prior examples of work. In this particular case the main focus of the work is a very accurately and well created hand rendered typeface. This is important for me to look at at the moment because I am considering having some typography in my finalized piece. The font is very smooth and well observed, with constant counters and letter hight.

Kristian rssell

This type of illustration uses an altered photo in its design. The blending colours and distant feel of the image are really unusual. The work is bright, but at the same time has a dull haze which mutes some colour. I'm on the fence if I like it or not though.

Klaus haapaniemi

This piece of work is another very nice and intricate example of work, any one looking at the image can clearly tell that there has been a long time invested into drawing this one piece. The striking aspect of this image is how the colours have been very delicately chosen and contrasted. The blue petals of the leaves makes the bright red ribbon stand out very brightly and creates a very competent striking picture.

Kate gibb

An much more traditional and decollate way of producing an image. This piece obviously has a lot of skill in the way it has been painted and captures the shape, colour and impression of the birds being observed very accurately. The way of working is very traditional and detailed, which is nice to see as well as all the digital stuff floating around.

Kam tang

Another very distinct stile of work. In this piece there has been close attention payed to the detail and intensity of the lines. The birds in the image are very well observed, looking almost life like in appearance. An interesting way of producing an image by making very distinct tonal values and a very impressive piece of work considering hoe well draw it is.

Jody barton

A good example of hand rendered typography, what's nice is that in this piece of work the type has been coloured in with water colours or inks. The type is surprisingly well structured being hand rendered and is very visually bold and eye caching. I intend to use some hand rendered type in my book at some point and this is a good example of potential inspiration.

Jesse Auersalo

Another example of very unique and inspired work. The clown is made digitally, changing the image in different ways to make an striking and somewhat scary image.

Jasper goodall

Goodall is a very recognized and very well respected figure in a lot of areas of art works. He ha many different references for his work and illustrates a lot of different subject matter but mostly creates his work through a digital means. This illustration is very interesting, the most noticeable aspect of this image is the variety of textures that are created within the image. A fine example of what a refined hand can do with a wealth of materials and techniques.

Genevieve Gauckler

Something very different now, this work is made digitally to look like it has been made by hand, using playdoe or something of the sort. The work is very quirky and has a very stylized feel to it. Creating a sense that the drawings one is producing is a very important part of illustration and is something I need to really consider when making my final piece.

Filipe Jardim

I really like this work. The simple lines and somewhat naive stile of drawing has a very distinct charm to it and I think that this image works really well. The picture has a very considered use of ink using it sparingly. Jardims work is very simple and minimal, with the use of careful lines and sparing ink marks he creates very distinct an illustrative pieces.

David foldvari

This work is a vastly different stile to what I intend to do with my FMP, however I find the limited use of colour with black and neutrals found in this picture work well and create a very visually striking effect. The image uses a photo real image with hand rendered graphics in the background to create a very juxtaposed image with a very distinct stylized feel.

Adrian johnson

This work is very heavily digitized and vectored, I like this example of work because of the amount of vibrant colours used and the intricacy and interest of the design. I find the way Johnson has used negative space to be very sensitive and looks really interning, putting the image on an off black background and leaving the features wight has worked really well in this image.

AIRSIDE!

Airside are one of my favorite design studios, this is because of the brightness and vibrance of the animations and characters. The designs of the charters are very lively and have a real sense of life with them, the colorful characters and humorous animations capture the mind and are some of the reasons why I enjoy Airside's work.

I went on a small filed trip down to the icon gallery the other day to look at the exhibition, there was some interesting works there but, they didn't aspire to me, at first he room looked as if it was being refurbished, and it was interesting to see small diamonds and valuable metals in the walls the art was very minimal and out there, to much so for my tastes though.

Gattaca

Gattaca was an interesting movie to watch. However obviously in trawled with the super imposed artistic direction and set the director made narrative flaws and stretched the basics of how DNA really works. With that aside, however the movie was defiantly enchaining and well worth a see. The basic premiss of the flick is that its the future and because its the future everyone is unsolicited prick, let me explain. People have stumbled across the technology to create designer babes, meaning that if your not a prepackaged tod you get shafted for every job going other than cleaner (and McDonald's workers I'd imagine). Herein lies the first technological pit of the film, when a baby is born it's WHOLE LIFE is maped out with a simple blood sample, not only genetic defects or inherent decease but the child's WHOLE LIFE. This is not posable in realty because ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS have an impact of health but suspension of disbelief and all that so let's move on. So this kid, unaltered, is born (the main protagonist) and hes a wimp, he's got a week heart, grows to up skinny and is short. At first it was all fine and dandy, then his parents had another kid this time a designer baby (who do you think was the favorite?) The occurrence of the demon child caused the unaltered son to gain a inferiority complex and leave his family hose in early adulthood. Snap forward and the kid is working a cleaning job at a space station, space like every American is where the protagonist always dreamed of going. After working around the people in the station and watching the ships take off everyday the main character gets the ump to go and get a job there, but how will he do this, by assuming someone's identity of course, a British guy to boot. Needless to say he gets the job, falls in love almost gets found out and then theirs a happy ending of him taking off into space, not so happy for the British guy though, he turns crispy. Theirs sub plots involving his brother being a detective and murder that his brother is investigating, which his real identity is the suspected culprit. So on and so on. Overall the film was dry. A very commonly hashed out plot with the TWIST OF THE FUTURE AND CLONES OR SOMETHING! The movie, honestly didn't hold my attention to a great extent and fell on it's face every now and then. (I mean seriously they have all this super DNA tec and yet they can't tell that the main protagonist posing as an Englishman has an thick and i mean THICK American accent?) The film had some thought provoking content and a very fleshed out symbolic set but the theoretical value ie story and plausibility are very hit and miss. Id give it a 3 out of five. A OK film but not that masterful.
