This animation was done for a brief where i had to advertise the summer of love for radio one, in the actual piece I chose to maintain a simple human feel, this was done by using hand rendered graphics rather than vector lines. The animation it's self came out very well, although i fell it could have been longer and the typography within it is somewhat week, but the bright colors and fast pace maintain the lively feel of the radio identity, and the chose to base short the around the radio one logo added a lot to the recognition of the station.

Typography! I'm going on start on illustration work soon!
This poster design has been made based around the Trajan typeface, the main thing i decided on in this design was that based on my research it needed to look some what structured. This was mainly based on the fact that the type was lifted and slightly modified from Roman letter-forms from temples and I wanted to convey and show this in my design, this poster is my favorite but do feel that the basic notion of structure has been lost on it.
This design is very simple and I think somewhat clever, the idea hear was to create the image and meaning of the word through simple use of lay out, and in this design i have done this by making the work in the shape of a sum with the one on its side to make it look like a negative symbol.
This design is a earlier version of the previous poster, i don't like it quite as much, but I do fell it captures the concept behind the font more accurately in that the design looks somewhat technical in its structure and the layout is reminiscent of a vague temple i think anyway >>.

yellow day!
Well here are two of my more unsuccessful designs but I still like them in there own way. The one above is based on the x height of letters (which is the distance between the baseline and the top of a lower case letter (unless it has a ascender) for the unwise). The use of yellow has no real significance other than to make it stand out. The simple use of shapes and letter get the point across but the design overall seems a bit on the naive side.
Do your eyes hurt? This design was based with the concept of illegibly so in this instance the yellow adds to the idea of making it hard to read, the chose in color in this one has more thought behind it but I think it turned out to be a bit much. It is indeed illegible but it's also painful as well.
a selection of type postcards
Some of the designs are among my favorite examples of minimalism i have made thus far. They are based around the idea of showing different ways more traditional examples handle typography, the one above refers to the size of body copy in that it is usually best kept to between 8 and 10 pts this is shown very simply in the forms of red dots instead of numbers down ether side of the design, I chose to use the elegant and simple helvetica neu typeface to keep the design as bear as passable, which in this case worked well as was indeed a good thing. The whole design has a solid black fill as i feel that is is one of the ways to make use of negative space in an image.
This design has a focus on stress, the main way I have tried to show this through the design is to make some elements within it less bold to give the feeling of being less stressed on the paper, the link is simple and very to the point and it has made a simple to the point and somewhat mordesq image. The concept of stress through weight is reenforced through the use of simple lines in the middle that go from light to dark and then red with the weight of line thinking. This graphic reenforces the type and fills the design somewhat which i thought in this case was needed.
The 'correct' version of my first post, I don't like it as much as that one but it still works well the design again carries over the theme of super simplicity and basically shows its meaning in the most up front way. Kerning is the space between characters and I have shown how it should be kept even with simple evenly spaced lines in the corner of the design.
This design is breaking the traditional type rule of maintaining a medium length of line not making them to long of short, i have broken the rule in this design be doing just that, streching the lines of the characters to make them to long. I put the design on a simple of black background so the wight and black text and lines would show up with equal intensity, overall I think that design came out very well and it shows the rule and it being broken!
This is the traditional version of the design above in that I have laid the text out neatly and not broken the rule, Although the design is probably my most simple it is also one of my favorite.

A Annoying Question!
This was a very early brief I was given in collage, we had to produce a design on something that people say, in my case i chose a phrase that annoys me every time someone says it and that phrase or question is were did you loose it? It has always annoyed me because in reference to having lost something if the said person knew where they lost it said object would not be missing! Simple no? Well anyway I went about designing the piece on the items people loose, such as remotes, socks (in my case memory sticks) and then designed a irregular font based on it. The final outcome came out very well, and had a unexpected retro look to it. Thus the use of the triply question mark or maybe i was in a hippy mood. ANYWAY the design turned out looking really good and i'm very pleased with it.
The two designs above are variations in color which I feel don't work as well as the blue plus there is a spelling error in both of em XD.

One of my ideas for the d&ad on the metro news paper
This design was made for the metro d&ad brief, I produced a few designers for this project but this particular one is my favorate, however ultimately I could not use it as my final for the project because I felt the the thinking behind it was week. The design itself works because, like many pieces of my work it is very simple. The colour of the back ground is taken from the logo colours of the metro news paper. The idea behind the poster is very simple, the slogan I came up with for the news paper was free and full of news, and because of that, I chose to cut out the word 'metro' and place images of the news paper behind it, making the metro literally full of news! Get it? The use of tight text and negative space help the design greatly. This particular design has come out much more polished than I thought it would and I am very pleased with it.
My very early font idea the c looks hungry XD
This font design is my very early idea by this point I had decided on the concept of speed and this was my first attempt to make it into a typeface, the font itself is ok and the theme of speed this is done by the extended serifs however, this typeface I experimented with making it italic to further cement the idea of some form of movement within it, this idea did not work out that well however, this was mainly due to letters with backwards bowels such as the d and this in turn ruined the serif's

Kerning
This design was made as part of a collage project as a group of different post cards, i have chosen this as my first blog post because it is, I feel the strongest design from the most recent project, i do like to work both digitally and with hand this image being made on illustrator is obviously Digital. The basic concept behind the design was to make a image that breaks the traditional idea for font design, in this case the concept that to make a attractive image the designer needs to give a word and space through regular tracking and kerning, i did the opposite to that and placed all the words and letters on the same spot. The image is not a legible piece of design by any means but the idea behind it was not to make a nice neat image, but to rather make a mish mash mess, to prove that a design doesn't have to be neat to be good wich I hope is the case with this work! On a side note i would also like to state that despite what I just said I am a big fan of minimalism and the use of negative space in a image.
FIRST POST
YEA! Just set up this new blog , I like to think of myself as a illustrator and graphic designer and hope this blog will become known throughout the industry! But that may be a little optimistic. Since this is my first step into the unknown blogging world I will be uploading collage work and personal stuff that i've done to try and get my stile out there, so look, follow and enjoy my work.
